An invitation from the Gay Officers Action League

by Tracy Mahota

As we well know, gays and lesbians work in occupations that are as varied as the members of our community. Few occupations, though, carry the added stress of your life possibly depending on whether or not your co-workers know you are gay, and how tolerant they are of that fact.

been targeted by false allegations, differential treatment on the job and a very secret and subtle gay bashing by co-workers. GOAL has been there in times of need for our members and with your continued support, we will keep our organization in the frontlines in the battle for equality in justice. We strive to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Many of GOAL's members are current law enforcement officers. We also recognize

STATE OF OHIO

Such is the dilemma of gays and lesbians who serve in the safety services, which include police officers, firefighters and corrections officers. Typically, these work forces are less than friendly to the idea of working side by side with someone who might be gay or lesbian.

For this reason the Gay Officers Action League, Ohio Chapter was formed. We are an organization that recognizes the added stresses of serving in these occupations. Our active membership is open to all current and former police officers, corrections officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, dispatchers, bailiffs and court and prosecutorial personnel. We also offer an associate membership to spouses and individuals who support our organization.

GOAL offers support, camaraderie and social activities for our members and their spouses. Often, members of our community who serve proudly in these occupations have

that our community sometimes receives less than professional treatment by law enforcement agencies. The Gay Officers Action League hopes to serve the communities we live in by acting as a liaison between local police departments and gay and lesbian organizations.

We are available to speak at groups about topics concerning safety issues and concerns, ongoing criminal problems and employment issues for gays and lesbians who serve in the safety and services field. GOAL also has members who are certified instructors in cultural diversity, which the state of Ohio now requires to be taught in all police academies.

If you are employed in the safety services field and you'd like to join our organization to help make a difference, or if you're in need of support for work related problems you face because you're gay or lesbian, or if you just want to get together with a bunch of fun people, then please, contact GOAL and become a part of the solution today. Your confidentiality is highly respected.

Contact GoalOH@ameritech.net or call 614-253-3144 or write to Box 10814, Columbus, Ohio 43201. If we don't hear from you, we hope to see you at the March on Washington in April.
